We need to put our cat up for adoption or place her somewhere...?

Well, we have to move into an apartment and we can't keep her. We don't have the time to put her up for adoption ourselves and wait for a response from someone interested, so where could we take her? We were thinking of some sort of shelter but they usually RESCUE animals, not take them in from people who just want to get rid of them, or am I wrong? Any suggestions?

1. Shelters have 'owner surrenders' at every shelter. You can go to your local shelter, you just have to fill out some paperwork and surrender all legal rights of the animal over to the shelter. That would honestly be the best way to know that your cat will go to a good home. You can also talk to your vet-- my vet's office has 3 cats that live there and are waiting to be adopted.

Also if you are so worried about having your animal put to death like people like "ken" who decided to tell me that I killed the dog I ADOPTED threw a shelter, you can always look for a no kill shelter.

2. well u could give her to the pound

3. i am getting tired of hearing about getting rid of cats, why didn't you look into an apt. that allowed pets???? the feline has becomed accostomed to you, how sad to have to part ways:( did you look into a pet deposit????? most landlords are blood sucking voulchers that would love to take extra money, ask the landlord!!! to "that's my girl akira" i disagree with you, when the person in question got a cat, she took the responsibilty of having to take care of it!!! i am very aware of hard times, but it doesn't mean you get rid of a loved pet.

4. Look on Petfinder .com for a cat rescue. A lot of the animals in shelters are there because of similar situations. Sometimes people, no matter how much they love them, just can't keep their pets. What you are doing is the right thing. Some people would just abandon them and let them try to survive on their own.

5. Do you know anybody to give the cat to.
To bad you dot live close to me ,here in Illinois I would take the cat.

6. Have you tried the humane society? You could surrender her there. Also they may have info regarding other organizations or even people that can help. I took in a stray recently and needed help placing her and when I call the humane society they were extremely helpful and I placed her very quickly. Do you have any family that might take her until you can find her a permanent home. Please just do not put the cat out. I know that people sometimes do things like that and it breaks my heart. When an animal is domesticated it is hard for them to fend for themselves if they ever have to be put in that predicament. Hope I helped.

7. Yeah your wrong Shelters usually KILL most of the animals they get there and it is mostly because of scum like you. It's the same reason 3 million cats a year are killed. It's because people think animals are throw aways and can be replace like an old shirt. Never mind that they totally depend trust and love the people taking care of them. That doesn't deserve any loyalty whatsoever when it is so convient just to dump them an replaced them some day. I'm sure when you got the animal you didn't realize that it was ever possible that you would move or have kids or want to travel and that the animal would be in the way/ Oh and don't forget! soime of those people that are willing to take that wonerful animal of off your hands will be more then happy to sell them to labs or use them to train their wonderful dogs for the ring! Thank you very much for being you!

8. I agree with Rolex. Why did you wait until the last minute? You should have started looking for a home for her the minute you knew you had to move. And,did you ask the landlord if you could pay extra to keep the cat? It just might work,if you love the cat enough to do it.

9. Yes shelters will take your kitty, shelters do take owner surrenders all the time.

sorry you have to get rid of your kitty, have you thought of asking friends or family to take the cat, this way, you can still your kitty every so often.

does your apt not allow animals.......

good luck

10. Post it on craigslist.com whether you want to sell it or give it away for free that site will be very useful. make sure to post it in the pet section.

11. You really should have found an apartment that accepts cats. When you adopted your cat you accepted the responsibility of caring for her for the duration of her life. A cat is a living thing, not a disposable commodity. Many shelters do take in animals "that people just want to get rid of", but there are no guarantees that these cats will find homes and after a period of time they may be euthanized if they are unable to be adopted. There is usually a fee of $50-100 to surrender your animal, this fee cannot be by-passed.
My suggestion? Find an apartment that would allow you to keep your cat. If you do decide to surrender her to a shelter, don't ever adopt a cat again because it is obvious that you are uncapable of the responisibilty involved. A cat is not something to be "gotten rid of" when they no longer interest you.

12. Shelters and animal services will take any animal surrendered to them (there are special places for wildlife) because their humane mission is prevent suffering from neglect or people taking cat or dog out in the country and just dumping it on the side of the road to fend for itself.

When you surrender and animal to such a place they have the legal right to the animal and can do what they deem is in the animal's best interest. If they do not find the anamal adoptable or the shelter has no space they will euthanize it.

That's the reality of the situation.

13. Hey there-- don't listen to these flamers here. They are understandably very heated and upset about this issue, but they invalidate their words of 'kindness' and 'love' by treating you with disrespect. Cats are not the only ones who deserve respect.

What is important isn't WHY you have to give up your cat, it is HOW. Your reasons are your own, and as I don't know you, I will not question them. I hope others will do the same.

There are plenty of no-kill shelters out there, just look for them online.
