I recently learned about the ragamuffin cat breed. I thought only ragdoll cats existed. Can someone tell me what breeds of cat would you breed to get the ragamuffin? Is a ragdoll cat bred with a domestic tabby? Is a ragdoll bred with a maincoon/norwegian forest cat/manx/nebelung? Serious answers only please.

2. Interesting question and I had to look it up - seems they came from some original Ragdoll lines but breeders wanted more then the pointed/bicolors. Here's an interesting article on the Ragamuffins.

As far as I can tell, the Ragdolls were the only breed used - the rest were street cats (domestics) and not any other breed like a MC, Manx, etc.

3. Ragamuffins were bred from Ragdolls. A group of breeders split off from the main group and had to use a different name, but they were breeding the same cats. The Ragdoll breeders decided to focus on only the colourpoint cats (with or without white spotting), while the Ragamuffin breeders carried on with a broader range of patterns. Some outcrossing to Persian and Siberian has taken place, but you cannot breed a Ragamuffin by crossing a Ragdoll with a Persian or Siberian. Outcrossing is a carefully managed programme.

4. The RagaMuffin was created by the same breeder who created the Ragdoll (Ann Baker) because she wanted cats of a similar look and temperment to the Ragdoll but with more colour variety. Ragdolls were crossed with Persians and Siberians. Some lines have just one of these breeds in them, others have both.

The end result is a breed that's quite a bit different from the Ragdoll. The RagaMuffins forehead is rounded with a slight nose break while the Ragdolls have a flat forehead. The RagaMuffin also has large walnut shaped eyes while the Ragdoll's eyes are oval. The Ragdoll ONLY comes Pointed while the RagaMuffin can be solid, tortie, torbie, smoke, bicolour, pointed. My cat, Café Mocha Valencia is a RagaMuffin and her great grandfather was a Persian. Her colour/pattern is Seal Mink Tortie and White.

And "what breeds of cat would you breed to get the RagaMuffin"? You wouldn't. It's been an established breed since 1994 so the only way to get RagaMuffin kittens is the mating of pedigree RagaMuffin to RagaMuffin. Registered, pet quality kittens start at around $1,000.

The RagaMuffin has been accepted as a breed with ACFA for awhile, just recently accepted by CFA and still only "Registration Only" with TICA.
