im thinking about rescueing a cat from my local cat rescue centre, do i have to pay?

1. Yes there is always an adoption fee , so that the facility can keep running . Shelters spay and neuter and administer shots before adopting kitties out so it is only fair there is an adoption fee. It is normally between 50 - 100 $ .2. If your concern is paying, you may not be prepared to have a pet just yet. A small adoption fee is minimal compared to the vet visits and any medications/procedures your new pet would need. If you're worried about a small adoption fee, perhaps you should wait.
Most shelters charge anywhere from $5-$40 depending on the animal, less for smaller types of animals. It varies by shelter and location, it could be free, it could be more. The only way to know is to call your shelter and ask or look them up and see if they have a website which should have all that information.
